Read from the living world

What life here has done
for the first time.

Nothing on this board is awarded or arranged. No animal in Vivarium is told what to do: each has a brain wired from a published connectome, and its body does only what that brain's own command neurons fire for. When a kind of animal is measured to have done something for the first time, by its own brain, it is written here once, with the day of the world it happened on.

How an entry gets here

Each animal carries marks of what it has itself done under its own brain's command: fed (its brain fired the neurons that work its mouthparts, with food under them), fled (its escape neurons fired on the side something loomed), flew, mated (he tried and her brain accepted), refused a suitor, laid eggs, caught another animal, learned (the synapses of its mushroom body were changed by what happened to it). Every thirty seconds the world is read for marks that are not yet on the board, and for records: the oldest animal, the longest unbroken line of descent, the most alive at once, the largest colony.

You can find any of these animals in the world, open it, and watch the neurons that did it.
